Event Description

The Royal Armouries museum at Fort Nelson presents the next after-hours Fort Talk on Wednesday 18 September with special guest speaker Graham Walters, an avid historian and member of Palmerston Fort Society.

During the evening, Graham will discuss the legend of a young Army Intelligence Officer, Thomas Edward Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, who during the First World War fought alongside Arab guerrilla forces in the Middle East against the Ottoman Empire.

Graham’s talk will explain how Lawrence was an intelligent and complex man trapped by divided loyalties.  After the war, Winston Churchill, who was then Colonial Secretary, employed Lawrence to help redraw the map of the modern Middle East. Lawrence retired in 1935 and soon afterwards was involved in a motorcycle accident near his home in Dorset. He suffered severe head injuries and died in hospital. After his death in May 1935 his reputation continued to grow. A blockbuster film about his life was made in 1962, Lawrence of Arabia, however this led to fresh questions being raised about his loyalties and involvement in the Arab revolt. Graham will reveal how Lawrence’s reputation was attacked and subsequently restored by secret British archives released in the 1960s and 1970s. Lawrence remains one of the most iconic figures of the early 20th century.
