The Royal Norfolk Show

Review By Chloe Brown
2016

Despite the adverse weather conditions on Wednesday morning, our spirits were not dampened and my mum and I set off for the Royal Norfolk Show. After much debate over how far away the show was, it turned out to be closer and a lot easier to access than our county show in Suffolk; entering without a single queue immediately created a good impression.

Walking through the gates, we were greeted to an array of fun fair rides, with queues of children, running around with excitement. Our first stop was the food hall, ideally located at the entrance to the show. This is no doubt my favourite section of the trade stands, with a mouth-watering selection of local, homemade concoctions. The day started well with a few tasters of rhubarb gin, then moving on to locally-sourced sausages in a multitude of obscure flavours and finally, of course, handmade salted-caramel chocolate brownies. We had to drag ourselves out of this section, with the promise of coming back for lunch, and move on to looking at the livestock.
I did not realise quite how many different breeds of sheep there were, from long hair ‘Wensleydales’, who can only be described as having a rather ‘hippy’ look to them, to the spotty ‘Jacob’ sheep. Following this we began to look around the enormous number of trade stands which were helpfully divided into sections, from farm machinery to shopping. A number of early Christmas presents were bought due to the lovely range of handmade jewellery and perfect gifts for animal lovers, like ourselves.

We ended our fantastic day at the side of the grand ring, intrigued by the speed of the scurry drivers. The atmosphere was gripping, with the crowd encouraging the little ponies on, despite the torrential rain that they were racing in.

On reflection, The Royal Norfolk Show exceeded all our expectations and we will definitely be back next year!
