The Grand Final of this year’s BurySOUND Music Competition

By Seymour Quigley

The Grand Final of this year’s BurySOUND Music Competition took place at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds on Friday night (3rd March) and it was absolutely fantastic: hundreds of people came to see five amazing young local bands (TUNDRA, GOLDBLUME, MAVERICK, STRETCH SOUL GANG and UGLY) step up on the Apex’s big stage, plus there was an incredible set by last year’s winners SUBURBAN MINDS.
In the end our judging panel (which comprised twelve local music enthusiasts who’re actively involved in making amazing things happen, including Sara Kathleen from Homegrown Music Festival, Gary Brown from Cambridge Junction, James Green from Vinyl Hunter record shop, local councillor Richard Rout and Fierce Panda Records founder Simon Williams) voted TUNDRA the overall winner; they will receive an array of prizes including studio time, tour van hire, musical equipment, and mentoring, advice and services from industry experts.  However, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we are also able to provide studio time to ALL of this year’s finalists, so at risk of sounding clichéd, everyone really is a winner!
BurySOUND 2017 was the biggest in the competition’s 19-year history.  We received more applications, held more heats and included more bands than ever before; the number of local businesses and music experts wanting to sponsor, support and/or judge the competition was overwhelming and wonderful; and the sheer quality of music on offer was staggering to say the least.
Next year will be the 20th anniversary of BurySOUND and we’re planning to make the 2018 spectacular; additionally, we (BurySOUND, The Apex, Washing Machine, and other independent promoters who’ve been involved in the competition as judges and sponsors) are hoping to bring more gigs to more venues, to better reflect the incredible wealth of talent our local DIY contemporary music scene has to offer.
