Summer Son, Friday 28th July 2017

As the warm weather turned colder and the rain clouds gathered I had a sinking feeling about the evening’s open air Texas concert. For the first time in weeks the area at the front of the stage was clear, so we braved the elements and took position, waiting for the band to appear. The stage was full of guitars and as the rain came down the band came on. The crowd gathered as Sharleen launched into song – her voice full of richness and totally note perfect. The huddled bodies and the familiar tunes soon warmed us up, then as if by magic the rain stopped as they began to sing ‘Summer Son’. The crowd danced and cheered and Sharleen bantered with the audience as she skipped around the stage, treating us to a mix of Michael Jackson self gropes and Elvis Presley stances.

The set they performed was full of their best tunes and even though Sharleen had professed to feeling ill, she gave a great performance, ensuring the whole crowd joined in. I was particularly impressed with the level of genuine gratitude and appreciation she expressed for the crowd. She thanked us for taking on the wet weather and kept us all engaged with several vigorous sing alongs. They completed the show with an encore performance of Inner Smile which left us all feeling elated as we made our way home. Another wonderfully enjoyable Newmarket Night at the Racecourse.
