On Wednesday afternoon, Palace House welcomed the Lexus Melbourne Cup on its tour around the world.

Arriving in Newmarket on Wednesday 11 July, the 18-carat gold Cup worth $200,000 was welcomed by Purple Moon, runner-up in the 2007 Melbourne Cup and now an RoR resident following a successful second career in Showing.

Members of the public enjoyed the opportunity to not only see but hold the ‘Loving Cup’ which marks the 100th edition of the three handled cup, first awarded in 1919.

Chris Garibaldi, Director of the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art commented: “We were absolutely delighted to welcome the Lexus Melbourne Cup to Palace House. The race is steeped in history and having a former runner up in the race itself here in the Rothschild Yard also makes it highly relevant. This was unique opportunity for the public to come and see this iconic racing trophy up close.”

Amanda Elliott, Chairman of the Victoria Racing Club commented: “I am absolutely delighted to be bringing the Cup to the home of horse racing in Britain and to experience the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art – nowhere has a deeper heritage in the world of horse racing than Newmarket.

The town has such a rich connection to the Melbourne Cup, with past European- trained Cup winners including Americain and Protectionist completing their quarantine in Newmarket, and so many Newmarket trainers travelling horses to Flemington each year to compete in our great race.”

The next public viewing for the Lexus Melbourne Cup will be Friday 13 and Saturday 14 July at the Moët & Chandon July Festival, where the Cup will be on display for racegoers to enjoy throughout the afternoon.

Sophie Able, General Manager for Newmarket Racecourses said: “We are delighted to be able to show the Melbourne Cup at the Adnams July Course on Darley July Cup Day this Saturday and provide racegoers with the opportunity to see it in person. With both the Melbourne Cup and Darley July Cup representing the best of racing around the globe, there is no more fitting location that the Home of Horseracing for it to be on display.”
