What’s On in October

There is so much on this October at the National Heritage Centre at Palace House Newmarket including a host of fun activities to keep children occupied during the half term.

7th October

Fun Palaces

10.30am – 4.30pm

Various Locations

Come and take part in Fun Palaces, a free international celebration of community, bringing people together with arts, science, crafts and tech. Throughout the Heritage Centre various family fun activates will be taking place including live interpretation, equine archaeology and performance poetry. All drop in activities on the day are free of charge.

21st – 22nd October

Have a go Grooming a pony

11am – 4pm in the Rothschild Yard

Join us over the half term for a chance to ‘have a go grooming’ a pony. You will be able to brush and cuddle our friendly inhabitants and learn more about their welfare and nutrition. Included in the general admission price, and no need to book – just turn up and enjoy the day!

21st October – 29th October

Half term family activities

10am – 5pm in the Picnic Room, Rothschild Yard

October half term is full of fun activities. Enter our colouring and crafts competition for the chance of winning some wonderful prizes – you can pick up the colouring sheets from Palace House Shop. Every day at 12pm and 2pm there will be an object handling workshop – here you will discover the hidden science behind certain objects in the museum and have the chance to get up close to some of our weird and wonderful collection! These activities are included in general admission.

25th October

Show and Tell – Side Saddle Saddlery

11am – 4pm in the Picnic Room, Rothschild Yard

Come and meet Coralie, a traditional saddler- who will explain her unique craft throughout the day. Here you will learn about the work and materials involved in the construction and repair of side saddles. This workshop is included in general admission.

27th October

Learn to Work with Cameras

11am – 4pm in the Alborada Education Centre

Bring your cameras along and spend the day learning the art of photography with photographer Joanna Hudson. Here you will spend the day developing the skill of photographing live horses in our very own Rothschild Yard. Work with our beautiful equine residents and discover the beauty of the thoroughbred horse through the lens.  All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Some cameras will be available book to ensure your place 01638 667314.

Admission to workshop £5.00* payable on the day. *Includes annual ticket holders

28th October

Museums at Night: Edwardian Halloween Family Fun

5pm – 8pm Packard Galleries and Palace House Garden

Even Queen Victoria celebrated Halloween in 1896 at Balmoral “When darkness fell the festivities began!” Come and explore the Packard Galleries in our special Museums at Night event. Meet the servants preparing for the Rothschild family Halloween festivities,   Get hands on with some Edwardian games such as apple-bobbing! Crafts and stories will take place throughout the evening in The Mews so come down and join in the fun! All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Make sure you book into The Tack Room for a spooky supper!

28th – 29th October
