Stone carving with James Sutton at NCCD
Sat 03 Jun – Sat 17 Jun 2017
This June NCCD is hosting an exciting 3-day traditional limestone carving workshop with local sculptor James Sutton.
Heritage craft skills are increasingly under threat and being lost to the rise of technological advancements. However, here at NCCD we want to preserve and celebrate these skills and help pass on our enthusiasm to members of the public too. That’s why this June we’re so excited to announce our 3-day short course of limestone sculpture carving with artist and sculpture James Sutton.
This course is the perfect opportunity for beginners to both gain an insight into the basics of the skills, techniques and tools required for stone carving and also take your own designed handmade limestone sculpture home.
The first part of the course on Sat 3 Jun will focus on the basics of the tools, techniques used and test various surface finishes that can be achieved. After learning the foundation skills in week one and developing a design, participants will begin carving their sculpture and creating the basic form on Sat 10 Jun. In the third and final week on Sat 17 Jun, participants will continue to form of their piece, as well as adding final details and polishing.
All three workshops will be facilitated by James Sutton, who graduated from the University of Lincoln in 2005 with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Decorative Craft, specialising in stone carving.
A former attendee of James’s workshop at NCCD IN 2016, Harriott Brand said: “James is a brilliant tutor. I did a two-day course at NCCD and learnt so much and created a sculpture I am proud of…then went on and bought the kit!”
