Early Opening Hours at the new National Heritage
Centre during Race Days and Tattersalls Sales in
Newmarket this spring
- The National Heritage Centre will open an hour earlier for racegoers and Tattersalls visitors during the Craven, Guineas and Spring meetings
- The popular Tack Room restaurant will also be open from 8am
For the first time, the National Heritage Centre at Palace House will be opening early to the public during the horse sales and race days in Newmarket this spring. Opening hours will be 9am – 5pm daily on 17th – 20th April, 4th – 7th May and 18th – 20th May.
The earlier opening times will allow visitors that are in Newmarket for the Tattersalls Sales, and Newmarket Races a chance to explore the Heritage Centre before they embark on their racing-related activities. The new attraction at Palace House is the perfect venue for any racing enthusiasts. The National Horseracing Museum explores the history of horseracing and Newmarket’s role in its development. There is also a focus on the science of horseracing, which many visitors, especially those that are familiar with the old Museum might not expect to see displayed! In the Maktoum Thoroughbred Gallery, the evolution, anatomy, breeding of race horses is explored through video displays and audio-visual interactives. Of course the visit won’t be complete without having a go on our race horse simulator and see just how fit a jockey has to be to ride in a race. Trust us it won’t take long before your legs start to burn!!
There will also be the chance to meet some old racing heroes in the Rothschild Yard, where horses such as Our Vic, Kingsgate Native, Walkon and The Cheka have been stabled since the attraction opened in November (check the website to see who is currently in residence).
In the palace, originally built for Charles II, is the Fred Packard Gallery of British Sporting Art, where some of racing’s most famous artists’ work is displayed. From George Stubbs, John Herring, Sir Alfred Munnings to John Skeaping and Nic Fiddian Green – there will be something to capture any horse lover’s imagination!
A racing brunch in The Tack Room is not to be missed – book in to save disappointment.
There may be too much to do in a morning before you head out for a day’s racing or sales, however that won’t matter. All admission tickets are valid for 12 months from the day of purchase and cost just £16.50!
