Palace House, the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing & Sporting Art is celebrating coming to the end of a very successful first year of their new trainee scheme;

“Transforming People to Transform Museums.” Palace House has been working with Colchester and Ipswich Museums on the scheme which consists of nine trainees in five museums across Suffolk. This is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of their ‘Skills for the Future’ programme. Palace House appointed their first Community Engagement Trainee, Charley Murfitt, in October 2018 and are now looking to appoint another two trainees when Charley finishes in August of this year.

Transforming People to Transform Museums’ scheme is about transforming museum environments through the introduction of new perspectives. The current trainees, based at Colchester and Ipswich Museums, Leiston Long Shop Museum, the Museum of East Anglian life and here at Palace House, are dedicated individuals, with no previous paid museum experience, who are all looking to develop new skills, connect the local community through the respective museum’s collections and gain authentic meaningful experience working in the museum sector.

Since October of last year, the Palace House Community Engagement trainee, Charley, has worked in various roles centred round community engagement. This has included working with the marketing, learning and curatorial teams in helping to deliver various projects around the site throughout her time.
‘We are delighted to be part of a programme which aims to support local people to learn on the job in a museum environment while developing transferable skills. We have benefited enormously from having a fresh perspective from a young person just setting out on their career.’ – Hazel Courtley, Community Engagement Manager Palace House will now be looking for two more trainees to join the Palace House team from October of this year. An open day will be held on the 15th June 12pm – 2pm for anyone interested in these posts: no previous experience in museums is required; trainees will gain experience of museum practice by working with professionals across a range of teams including display, collections, learning and community engagement. The trainees will be given a monthly bursary of £1200. Applicants need no prior experience or qualifications, other than a C grade or Grade 4 GCSE in English.
