The Hunter Fleet at Hunter’s Yard

The Hunter Fleet at Hunter’s Yard, on Womack Staithe in Ludham, is a truly special and unique fleet of traditional 1930s wooden sailing yachts.  It is run by a Trust (the Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust) whose purpose is to maintain the Fleet and the traditions of the Yard.  Keeping ‘Percy’s Lovely Ladies’ afloat and available for all to enjoy year after year for people of all ages, and we actively encourage Youth Sailing on the Hunter Fleet by offering discounted sailing opportunities to schools and organised youth groups.

Our highly skilled craftsmen work tirelessly to keep these beautiful boats in wonderful condition throughout the season, and then give them full makeovers through the winter in the sheds.  The vast majority of the work is in keeping with the traditional methods that have always been used here at Hunter’s Yard and our craftsmen undertake work for privately owned boats here between April and September while our own ladies are out on the water.

We offer a range of services from day boat (half decker) hire, cabin yacht hire for full weeks and short breaks, RYA training courses, individual instruction, and our own ‘cabin yacht conversion course’ for those wishing to learn how to go from sailing half deckers to handling a bigger boat.  We also offer skippered sails which make a great treat for those who would like to be taken out on one of our beautiful sailing yachts by an experienced skipper, and these are also useful for those wanting to take the helm for the first time or to refresh their skills.

Another rather special opportunity we offer is our ‘Learn to Sail’ holiday.   You can learn to sail whilst enjoying your Norfolk Broads holiday on a Hunter boat.  At the end of it, you will have gained RYA certificates (subject to passing) and had a couple of days of sailing unassisted – although our instructors are happy to continue assisting you if required.  Full information of how our Learn to Sail holidays work can be found on our website or in our brochure.

We aim to make spending time on a Hunter boat accessible to sailors and non-sailors alike with our range of services and opportunities.
