Glyndebourne’s Festival 2018 promises to be a vocal and visual feast – the very best in world-class opera.

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly where East meets West with devastating consequences in a tragic romance. One of opera’s great romantic comedies, Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier is a musical fantasy that tempers sweetness with satirical wit, farce with philosophy, humour with pathos. Bollywood meets baroque in David McVicar’s legendary production of Giulio Cesare – a Glyndebourne classic that brings all-singing, all-dancing energy to one of Handel’s greatest scores. A mysterious woman, a forbidden love, a family torn apart. Stefan Herheim, one of Europe’s most exciting directors, makes his company debut with Glyndebourne’s first new production of Pelléas et Mélisande in nearly 20 years. In Saul Barrie Kosky sensational staging marries spectacle and psychology to convey Handel’s musical portrait of mental collapse.

To close the festival: Vanessa. An operatic thriller from the age of Hitchcock, Samuel Barber’s Pulitzer Prize-winning first opera boasts one of the 20th century’s most beautiful scores.
