Event Description

The Peddars Way, a new piece by Kevin Flanagan, and was commissioned by the PRS Foundation.  It began with a walk; and is based on five days spent walking and camping along the Peddars Way in Norfolk, carrying a tarp, sleeping bag, sax, and digital recorder. During the walk, he visited each church and recorded himself playing a short excerpt of music which was composed for that church from its coordinates.  The music was then composed out for string trio, voice and keyboard, based on the geography and history of The Roman Road later called the Peddars Way. It uses the location of the churches, the resonance of their internal space, the text is an excerpt from the Roman historian Tacitus which is allegedly Boudicca’s final address to her tribe before the final battle, and lyric borrowings from Gregorian Plainchant.  This project seeks to link communities with contemporary music which has direct connection to their locality and history.

This is part of a series of projects which are looking at exploring ways of rooting music in the landscape, combining structures derived from the landscape and recorded sound to create music for chamber groups. It is inspired by landscape artists such as Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy, exploring ways of engaging musically with the landscape in ways other than just an ‘impression’; a ” …this is how it makes me feel…” sort-of-thing.

The players in this project are the composer and saxophonist Kevin Flanagan, the pianist and conductor Paul Jackson, a string trio made up of Norfolk’s own Steve Bingham, violinist and conductor (http://stevebingham.co.uk/), The violist Brenda Stewart, and the cellist Jon Fistein. The singer is the excellent American mezzo-soprano Jessica Lawrence-Hares (http://www.jessicalawrencehares.com/).
