Heritage Open Day at The Swiss Garden & The House at Shuttleworth
Date(s) - 18/09/2019
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
The Swiss Garden
Old Warden Aerodrome,
The Swiss Garden and Shuttleworth House are proud to be a part of this year’s Heritage Open Days, England’s biggest heritage festival involving 40,000 volunteers. This national event celebrates our fantastic history, architecture and culture; offering people the chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are free to explore.
The enchanting Swiss Garden was created in the ‘Swiss Picturesque’ style for the 3rd Lord Ongley in the early C19 and reopened in July 2014 after a major HLF-funded restoration. Serpentine paths lead to cleverly contrived vistas, many of which focus on the thatched Swiss Cottage. Beautiful wrought-iron bridges, ponds, sweeping lawns and the magnificent Pulhamite-lined Grotto & Fernery have all been given a new lease of life by this landmark project.
The Swiss Garden and the Shuttleworth House are pleased to offer free admission on Wednesday 18th September, as part of the 2019 Heritage Open Days event. Either explore the attractions at your leisure or book yourself onto a tour (details below).
The 200 acres of listed historic parkland, designed by renowned landscape architect Edward Milner, is a beautiful setting for the Grade II* listed House with impressive clock tower that stands today. Built by industrialist Joseph Shuttleworth in 1872 as his family home, close to London and away from his business and other home, Hartsholme Hall in Lincoln. Joseph Shuttleworth was the founder of the Clayton & Shuttleworth Iron and Steel Works employing thousands of workers in Lincoln. It is no surprise that when Joseph built The House in 1872 he used the then modern method of a steel frame structure on a 5 feet base of concrete for stability and with gun metal windows which in over 140 years have needed very little maintenance.
The paths in the Swiss Garden are firm and even, with some minor gradients, and most are suitable for access by wheelchair users.
Open 9.30-17.00 (last entry 16.00)
