Event Description

Assembled drawings and paintings by Chris Seaber were generated exploring an eclectic mix of interests prior to and during the time of Covid and lockdown. Chris Seaber says: ‘An idea for me has always been a point of departure not a destination’.

Having visited the Roman Villa at Fishbourne in Sussex just before the first lockdown, Chris initiated investigations about the original seven gates of the Roman City of London. He found that all these gates had very similar dimensions and inspired his series GATES.

When Chris lived in Cornwall he was intrigued by the view from Padstow towards Wadebridge and the outline of Cant Hill, which resembled a wall, a barrier. The overwhelming interaction of the fluidity of water and sky, together with the apparent diminution and expansion of landscape, seascape and sky as the year turns, all became salient factors in the resolution of the drawings in his series WALLS.

Just before the first lockdown, Chris was given some large old canvas tents by the local Scouts. He mused on the possibility of their scale, colour, patina and smell in the realisation of a series of future works. Then, serendipity struck and he was offered an exhibition in the South of France. This would be a travelling exhibition… a CARNIVAL.
