Event Description

Walter Harvey Hallam was an ordinary man cast into extraordinary circumstances. A London draper by trade, Walter volunteered for military service in 1915 as the horror of World War One unfolded across the battlefields of Europe. On July 1st 1916, Walter was ordered ‘over the top’ into the carnage of the Battle of the Somme. This is Walter’s story.

Written by Alison Raymond, the play has two main characters, four musicians/singers and a special effects operator. In 60 minutes, this company of seven tells the story of Walter Harvey Hallam and his adventures and experiences of signing up to serve as a soldier in World War One.

This production mixes dramatic, humorous and sensitive elements throughout and includes many folk songs.

The evening will open with songs from Martin Olyett and duo Bob Templeman and Annette Burrows. Martin Olyett is a singer songwriter who writes about a range of subjects, saying that he doesn’t consider himself folk, but writes about folk. Bob Templeman is an accomplished guitarist, bouzouki and ukulele player who accompanies singer Annette Burrows.  Their arrangements of familiar and unfamiliar covers span the decades, and include a variety of folk, blues, jazz, country and modern songs.

Tickets: £12, Students and concessions £11. Under 18 £7.50, on the door or in advance, by booking online at, by phone on 0333 666 3366 or in person at St Albans Central Library.
