Event Description

Flemish Oil Painting Techniques of the Old Master

5 sessions commencing Wednesday 11th September 1pm- 3pm

Join us at this 5 week course and learn the secrets of old masters’ technique. Each session will take place in our cosy converted barn that offers inspiring views of the beautiful Nottinghamshire countryside and surrounding vineyard. You will have time to relax and focus on your art as you build your knowledge and learn techniques. The course is designed for mixed abilities and by the end of the 5 weeks you will have completed your beautiful canvas.

What you will learn:

You will have the opportunity to develop and explore some of the techniques used by an Old Master: Rembrant van Rijn (1609 – 1669).  The painting will be done in 3 stages:

1 – Umber Underlayer

After the initial sketch with a pencil, the first stages are painted in thin washes using oils like watercolours. Each layer needs to dry properly before commencing on the next step.

2 – Dead Underlayer

In this stage the tonality is already chosen so the dead underlayer is prepared using white and black paints. Corrections can be made to the tonality without making radical changes.

3 – Colour layer

The final stage involves using transparent colours to show the tonal values used on all the other layers.

What is included:

All tools, materials and refreshments are included for you. Nothing to bring just yourself. We will also store your canvas between each session.

Session Dates: Wednesday 11th Sept / 18th Sept / 2nd Oct / 9th Oct & 16th Oct (please note there is no session on the 25th Sep)

Tutor Hansa Thoban

I have been teaching art for over 25 years and most of it has been in post 16 education.  My artistic skills had developed gradually over the years, during which time I had the opportunity to get certified in Fine Arts at Birmingham University.  My experience in teaching a wide range of artistic skills and the qualification didn’t quench my thirst for knowing more about the how the Old Masters painted. I didn’t find any schools of art that offered what I was searching for so I started my own journey of exploration and created an opportunity to learn and teach keen students a range of techniques used by Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Titian and Durer.  We explored through painstaking research and practical experimentation on how the Old Masters of 15th – 17th century painted.  Eventually, I found what I was looking for in the Flemish oil painting techniques of the Old Masters.  I have now made this painting technique as easy as possible for people with passion for the Old Masters.

To ensure the quality of your personal experience, group size will be limited to 10.
