Featuring seven competitive races, this pleasant June afternoon kicked off the Adnams July Course for the summer of 2018 season. Certainly there was some sunshine coming through the clouds and this meant a warm but not over-hot day with just two weeks to go to midsummer.

The event was well attended with Demi Lovato proving a draw to the younger crowd but as always at Newmarket there was a good spread of the generations and some fabulous fashions on show.

Local favourite Frankie Dettori was on fine form with a notable win on Amazing Red in the fourth race (3:40pm), a magnificent horse in the Dunlop Racing stable. He then came in winner very convincingly on Rococo in the penultimate race and this reporter was pleased to note his wife had backed ‘L Dettori’ to win this (as she always does). A small bet but a modest way to cover costs and have some fun banter with the bookies.

The last race came and went (Aclimatise the winer), then Demi L stormed on to the July stage backed by dancers and the music part of the evening commenced. It was a gutsy performance by her, characterised by energy and, boy, that girl looked like she was enjoying herself and everyone went home happy.
