Clay Pigeon Shooting

Grange Farm Shooting School

Situated in the beautiful countryside between Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, Grange Farm is proud of its reputation as one of the East of England’s top Clay Shooting tuition grounds. Set in 600 acres of countryside north of Wansford, Grange Farm couldn’t be any more accessible, being located just over a mile from where the major trunk roads, the A1 and A47, meet.

A family-run business, Grange Farm is still a working arable farm and busy livery yard – home to nearly 90 horses. But for the purposes of my visit, I was a guest of Grange Farm Leisure, home to a wide range of country pursuits, team building activities and wedding and events.

Clay Pigeon Shooting is one of the most popular activities on offer at Grange Farm and is available for individuals to very large groups all year round, I am told by Charlotte as she greeted us on arrival. A brief introduction to the venue and my session then followed, during the short transfer by 4×4 to the main shooting ground, where I was introduced to Steve Woods, my coach for the session.

Steve, a BASC Accredited instructor, was excellent and took me clearly and in detail through safety procedures and some interesting facts about ballistics. Cartridges were laid out, .410, 28, 20, up to 12 bore – I was amazed to learn just one of these contains on average 300 shot.

So could I hit my clays? Again, well taught, I hit my share, with a nice detail being that if I missed one (or two), then Steve would not leave it on a low note and fired off another brace of clays for me to hit next time. “Follow it up the smoke trail from behind,” he said, and once I got my eye in (my dominant, right eye, checked as such beforehand, looking down the rib of the gun) then results came. A great session, delivered with style and great professionalism by Steve.

Shooting is enjoyed by a varied range of abilities at Grange Farm, from complete beginners through to experienced game shots. Judging by the snapshots up on the walls of the shoot lodge, where we had a coffee afterwards, a fair few celebrity faces enjoy the spot too (I’m sworn to secrecy!).

This was a secluded and interestingly varied location, with good natural cover. Targets are set around a series of scenic ponds, with a cosy shoot lodge set back from the ground, overlooking a small brook, making it a great location for spectators as well as participants.

As well as individual sessions which make a fantastic Gift Experience, Grange Farm offers corporate team building days, stag and hen parties! Just call to discuss your requirements.
