A Day Out at Oxford Castle and Prison

Come and explore the 1,000-year-old history of Oxford Castle and Prison. Step back in time with our costumed guided tours and see the fascinating stories of the castle come to life. Hear the great tales of Empress Matilda or the fate of Mary Blandy, one of the prisons most famous criminals.

Situated near the centre of Oxford, the castle is one of the oldest buildings in the city centre and is a spectacle itself. Guided tours run every 20 minutes from 10 am and last one hour, admission also grants you access to our wonderful mound, where you can see the great Oxford skyline.

Led by one of our costumed character guides, the rich and fascinating history of Oxford and its castle and prison will be revealed to you. CLIMB the Saxon St. George’s Tower, one of the oldest buildings in Oxford, and enjoy its stunning 360° panoramic views over the historic city of Oxford DESCEND deep underground into the atmospheric 900-year-old crypt, the only surviving remains of St. George’s Chapel EXPLORE the austere confines of the 18th-century Debtors’ Tower and Prison D-Wing MARVEL at the mound of the 11th century Motte-and-Bailey castle, and discover its vaulted Well Chamber EDUCATE yourself about the modern history of the site and its inmates, in our historical Exhibition Wing At Oxford Castle and Prison, you will hear the great tales of Empress Matilda and the fate of Mary Blandy, one of the prisons most famous criminals. Discovering a 1,000 years of history in an hour-long guided tour that’s bound to educate and humour you! Once you’ve completed your tour, you can relax in our café which serves delicious Columbian roast coffees and cakes. It’s the perfect place to spread out your map of Oxford and plan on where to explore next in the city.

As well as our guided tours we offer exclusive group packages such as Jailbreak, an escape room experience where you and your friends have to outsmart our prison warden in order to escape the prison cell you are confined too. We also host Murder Mystery Evenings, a who-dun-it style experience, where your group gets to explore the whole castle and prison yourselves with the intention of uncovering the mystery behind a murder at the castle. Throughout the year we have a calendar of exciting events, which range from our applauded Shakespeare Festival to our annual GhostFest.
