2016 Charity of the Year – The East Anglian Air Ambulance

0

Dear EOE Readers,

The East Anglian Air Ambulance is a 365 day-a-year lifesaving service working across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Since the Charity’s launch in 2000, the dedicated, highly skilled medical crews on our specially equipped helicopters have helped to save the lives of hundreds of people unfortunate enough to be involved in accidents or medical emergencies in this region. This Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), has a doctor and a critical-care paramedic on board, who have specialist training to give advanced pre-hospital care to patients at the scene of an accident or medical incident. The East Anglian Air Ambulance is a Charity and receives no direct government funding. EAAA has to raise £10.2 million a year to maintain the lifesaving service. This is raised largely through local community fundraising. We are absolutely delighted to be EOE’s Charity of Year and are very much looking forward to the year ahead.

2015 was EAAA’s 15th anniversary year, it was also the year that brings one of the most significant advancements in the Charity’s history: the arrival of the EC145 T2 helicopter. Much larger than the current aircraft, it can carry enough fuel to fly for over two hours, with a range of 300 nautical miles (335 miles). Extending the reach and effectiveness of the EAAA medical teams enables the Charity to play a leading role in training the next generation of pre-hospital clinicians.

The first of the new helicopters will be based at the Cambridge base, but thanks to funding from the LIBOR fines fund, the EAAA will be getting another EC145 T2 in Norwich early next year.
